Ferial Haffajee is Editor-in-Chief of the highly rated South African Sunday newspaper City Press. She assumed the editorship in 2009 after successfully steering the investigative Mail & Guardian newspaper for five years. She is one of the leading women in media on the African continent and is a former chairperson of the South African National Editors Forum. She is a fearless and vocal defender of media independence. During her tenure City Press has grown into a powerful, investigative newspaper.

In 2014 she was one of the recipients of the Committee to Protect Journalists' International Press Freedom Award.
